Vipassana Meditation is a technique that focuses on observing and exploring the mind-body phenomena, ultimately leading to mental purification. This method has the potential to result in significant transformations in an individual's attitude and behavior, consequently influencing society at large. It is viewed as an effective tool for enhancing education, healthcare, organizational efficiency, management development, and fostering social change aimed at promoting secularism, national unity, and global understanding.
At times, we all encounter feelings of restlessness, frustration, and discord. The suffering we experience is often not contained within ourselves but is rather projected onto others. This approach to living is not conducive to inner peace. As social beings, we naturally seek harmony within ourselves and with those around us. Vipassana offers a path to attaining inner peace and harmony through the purification of the mind, liberating it from suffering and its underlying causes. Through systematic practice, individuals can strive towards the ultimate goal of complete freedom from all mental impurities.
Vipassana's resurgence after more than 2500 years has been remarkable. Although Vipassana meditation courses have been conducted in India since 1969, the absence of a dedicated institution to delve into the theoretical aspects of the technique was realized later. This need became apparent when Mr. S.N. Goenka, a prominent Vipassana teacher, started teaching courses on Satipatthāna Sutta—wherein the Buddha intricately elucidates the Vipassana technique.
During these courses, Goenkaji observed how students engaging with the Buddha's teachings (pariyatti) found profound benefits when applying them practically in their meditation (patipatti). This experiential comprehension strengthened their practice and motivated some to delve deeper into their studies. To facilitate further exploration, the establishment of the Vipassana Research Institute (VRI) became essential. The primary objective of VRI is to conduct scientific research on the origins and applications of the Vipassana Meditation Technique.
For decades, Goenkaji's teachings have inspired countless individuals not only to initiate their meditation journey but also to deepen their practice. This application aims to provide global access to Vipassana Meditation instructions and resources for all those interested in benefiting from this profound technique.
